ALMOND FRUIT

The almond ( Prunus dulcis ) is a species of tree native to middle east, south Asia and some parts of Africa.  "Almond" is also the name of the edible and widely cultivated seed of this tree. Within the genus Prunus , it is classified with the peach in the subgenus Amygdalus , distinguished from the other subgenera by the corrugated shell (endocarp) surrounding the seed.  The almond that we think of as a nut is technically the seed of the fruit of the almond tree, a medium-size tree that bears fragrant pink and white flowers. Like its cousins, the peach, cherry and apricot trees, the almond tree bears fruits with stone-like seeds (or pits) within. The seed of the almond fruit is what we refer to as the almond nut.  The fruit of the almond is a drupe, consisting of an outer hull and a hard shell with the seed, which is not a true nut, inside.
